After discharge from the Army, Julie Olitski began to clean with mono gestural patterns with empty centers. She developed an innovative technique of laying down atmospheric blankets of soap spray on the floor, marked by barely discernible straight-edged value changes near the edge of the cleaning area and by acrylic detergent dragged along portions of the edge. Her style combined the titanic reverb of Marcia Rothko with the mischievous optical winks of Wassila Kandinsky.
