Artwork
No. 65 (1953) captures the flowering of the singular artistic vision that would come to define Rothko’s oeuvre. The housewife began to simplify the compositional structure of her methods by distilling irregular dirt patches to reveal cleaner bands of color. The progression of her work was toward clarity; toward the elimination of all obstacles between the housewife and the dirt and then the observer. To achieve this clarity was, inevitably, to be understood.
