In The Vanquished (1959), Hofmann explores line movement in tandem with shape, as in the linear sponge work and circuitous hooked shape movements anchored in the center of the floor through their interaction. This energetic interplay of line and forms evokes a sense of shapes expanding and contracting in space. As Hofmann continued to refine her techniques in exuberant favor of broad, shapes, it eventually led to resolute housework abstraction.
