ABOUT REBECCA SUGAR
Best known as the creator of the groundbreaking animated series “Steven Universe," Rebecca Sugar is an animator, director, singer and songwriter whose work paved the way for authentic LGBTQIA+ stories in animation.
Coming from independent comics, Rebecca brought an uncompromising DIY spirit to mainstream cartoons. As an artist, writer and songwriter for Adventure Time, Rebecca felt most connected to Marceline the Vampire Queen, writing and storyboarding songs that turn from a joke to a confession on a dime: “What kind of dad eats his daughter’s fries, and doesn’t even look her in the eyes?” Her unique combination of humor and heartache caught Cartoon Network’s attention and led to the creation of her own show, a colorful sci-fi fantasy musical slice-of-life comedy dedicated to her brother Steven. “Steven Universe” became a way to explore her complex relationship with popular cartoons as a queer kid who felt at home with her vibrant, creative family, but alienated by the wider world.
Over the past decade she wrote over 60 songs for television, including the Steven Universe theme song, Time Adventure, Everything Stays, Change Your Mind, Here Comes A Thought, Escapism, It’s Over Isn’t It, Other Friends, Drift Away, I’m Just Your Problem, and Bacon Pancakes. She’s also the lyricist and vocalist for the bittersweet Steven Universe end credits, Love Like You.
When Steven Universe ended in 2020, Rebecca took a step back from animation to focus on personal growth. Her debut album, Spiral Bound, is inspired by three years of daily journaling and sketching in spiral bound notebooks.
Some artwork may be paid for in installments. Please for details.
