“Syunga”, literally translated is “the paintings of spring”. Syunga is one kind of UKIYOE, originated from the 17th century , which depicts the love life of the Japanese male and female as inspiration for many artists throughout history and around the world. Influenced by this celebration of life and love Mari Inukai has created a body of work displaying her talents in oil, watercolor, drawings, mixed media and even ceramic toys. Sexy and cute, her work combines contemporary figure painting with flat animated creatures and elements. In our upstairs gallery space, we will be featuring the work of “Tonomime”. In her own words, she attempts to “break the wall between imagination and sleep - as if to ask do you really know when you are you awake or asleep?”
