"The concept is a garden in an oasis. Since the exhibition will be held around summer, I attempted to paint a picture with a tropical atmosphere. I wanted to create a illustration that depict the heat but also somehow peaceful, so I chose an oasis as my motif. I also chose to draw a tiger not only because I love tigers, but also because 2022 is a year of Tiger in Chinese zodiac and I wanted to bring a sense of happiness to the illustration. In Japan, we are familiar with the culture of the
Chinese zodiac, but how about in the U.S.?
As is the case with my usual work, the line drawing process was particularly time-consuming. The process of deciding on the colors for the work also takes a lot of time, but without a solid base for coloring, the image of the finished work becomes blurred, so I proceeded carefully with the line drawings. To create a sense of depth in the work, I also paid attention to the overlapping of plants and leaves. I also wanted to create a fun screen, so I drew plants in various shapes. I aimed to create a fantastical atmosphere by weaving together leaves that I thought "could definitely exist" and plants with unrealistic shapes and patterns." -- Nanaco Yashiro
